How Can I Make My Face Look Younger?

5 Minute Read

Looking good can be a challenge. The effects of time can be brutal, leading millions to seek cosmetic surgeries, injectables, and other forms of rejuvenation—sometimes all at once.

Dr. Mesbahi offers his patients several years of cosmetic surgery expertise and a wide variety of options to address signs of aging in the face.

These procedures can be combined to address a specific area of the face or for longer-lasting results.

Facelift and Neck Lift

The gold standard when it comes to fighting the effects of aging, a facelift helps to smooth and tighten facial contours.

Facelift surgery is typically combined with a neck lift, which targets sagging skin along the jawline and neck area.

Dr. Mesbahi performs facelift surgery by using small incisions along the hairline, temples, and behind the ears, specifically placed to remain as inconspicuous as possible.

Facial muscles are pulled tight while excess skin and fat are removed.

With a neck lift, the incision is made underneath the chin, and Dr. Mesbahi may use liposuction to remove excess fat along the jawline before the neck muscles are pulled tighter.

General anesthesia is typically used during these procedures.

There will be swelling for about two weeks after surgery, and patients will need to keep their head elevated during that time.

Most people can go back to work after two weeks and should be well on their way to recovery after a month of recovery.

Sometimes referred to as an eyelid lift, blepharoplasty specifically targets wrinkles and drooping skin along the eyes for a younger, brighter look.

Upper blepharoplasty

  • Targets and corrects sagging or drooping upper eyelids.
  • Uses incisions created along the upper eyelid to remove and reposition muscles.
  • Corrects wrinkles and brightens the eye area.

Lower blepharoplasty:

  • Correct bags, dark circles, and puffiness under the eyes.
  • Incisions made either within the eyelid or just below the lower lash line.

Similar to a facelift and neck lift, blepharoplasty recovery will take several weeks.

Patients will experience swelling, especially in the period right after surgery, but symptoms usually subside quickly enough for most people to go back to work after two weeks.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation

This procedure is a powerful, yet non-invasive way to address aging concerns, leaving behind skin that immediately looks and feels younger.

It uses lasers to ablate or destroy the outer layers of skin, removing years of damage, age, and other defects.

Laser skin resurfacing can:

  • Reduce wrinkles and creases
  • Remove dark age or sun spots
  • Decrease scars or other skin defects
  • Tighten loose skin

Most patients are candidates for laser rejuvenation. Dr. Mesbahi will usually cleanse the skin with oils before performing the procedure using an anesthetic to minimize any discomfort.

There may be some swelling and skin will be irritated right after the procedure. Recovery depends on the size of the area treated, but downtime is typically minimal.

BOTOX® Cosmetic

One of the most popular rejuvenation methods available, BOTOX® Cosmetic is a particularly effective treatment for the deep creases that often form along the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes.

This non-surgical injectable uses the natural botulinum toxin type A, a neuromodulator that temporarily paralyzes muscle movement.

This helps to immediately smooth out deep creases in the skin but also inhibits the development of future fine lines and wrinkles.

BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments can be completed in about twenty minutes, and there is no need for anesthesia or any other preparation.

There’s also little to no downtime, and results are almost immediately apparent. Smoother skin is obvious after the very first injection.

Repeated treatments are necessary to ensure the best long-term results.

How to Choose Which Procedure Is Best for Your Face

Upper Face and Eye Area

A traditional facelift will help reduce some of the wrinkles and creases that form along the upper face and eye area. Laser skin resurfacing is also effective at smoothing out creases along the forehead and brows.

Blepharoplasty is one of the best surgical methods to correct wrinkles and remove sagging skin around the eyes.

Patients looking for less invasive measures to combat aging in the upper face and eyes can use BOTOX® Cosmetic. This injectable smooths out creases in this area and also prevents future wrinkles from occurring, making it an attractive option for younger patients.

General Facial Area, Mid-face, and Cheeks

There’s nothing that goes quite as deep as a traditional facelift procedure does when it comes to lifting, smoothing, and tightening facial contours.

Facelift surgery is particularly effective in removing excess or sagging skin, literally lifting years off the face.

Some patients experience a severe loss of volume in the cheeks as collagen production slows, causing skin to grow thinner and weaker.

A facelift can help restore some of the lost volume by redraping tissues to better fill facial contours.

Laser skin resurfacing or other laser treatments are also effective for patients who don’t want surgery. Laser skin resurfacing can help erase wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, and tighten loose skin.

Lower Face, Jawline, and Neck

A facelift combined with a neck lift is one of the best methods to remove the sagging skin that often develops along the lower face and jaw areas. These two procedures help craft smoother overall contours along the face, neckline, and collar for a more youthful, refreshed look.

A neck lift may be performed by itself if a patient needs it, but the procedures are almost always combined for the best overall outcome.

Patients who want to avoid surgery may also use laser rejuvenation treatments to tighten loose skin. Laser rejuvenation is particularly effective in removing fatty deposits that tend to develop along the neck and jawline.

Gravity, sun exposure, lifestyle choices, and genetics all contribute to the breakdown of the skin, muscles, and tissues of your face, resulting in the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Facelift surgery restores definition and a youthful appearance to an aging face. While you may assume that facelift surgery is only an option after the effects of aging have taken root, this isn’t always the case. Some men and women choose to undergo facelift surgery before the effects of time become overly noticeable.

Facelift Candidates

Patients who are good candidates for facelift surgery are those in good general health that are beginning to notice:

  • The heaviness of their skin
  • Deep lines around the nose and mouth
  • Loss of definition in the cheeks
  • Jowls
  • Banding on the neck

Facelift Surgery at Different Ages

Between 35 and 40

In recent years, the number of patients between the age of 35 and 40 has increased at a surprising rate. While still young, patients in this age group choose to undergo facelift surgery for many reasons. For some, it may be that their face has prematurely aged due to high levels of stress, prolonged sun exposure, or an unfortunate roll of the dice in the genetics department. Many are attempting to postpone the onset of visible aging with a less invasive procedure. Finally, the quality of their skin and the underlying tissues is still relatively good. They have elasticity and suppleness, which allows for faster healing, less scarring, and in some cases, better results.

Between 40 and 50

This is the most common age for patients to undergo facelift surgery. At this age, patients show more visible aging than those in their thirties while still maintaining skin, tissue, and muscle elasticity. The quality of results is generally high with patients in this age group, as they don’t require the same amount of correction as those who are older.

Between 50 and 65

Patients in this age group typically require more extensive correction. By this time, the loss of skin elasticity is more noticeable, which creates an additional, more challenging factor. That said, patients in this group not only achieve desirable results but generally have more of a transformation than those who choose facelift surgery at an earlier age.

The Verdict

In the end, there is no ideal age for a facelift because everyone ages at a different rate. The combination of genetics, stress, lifestyle choices, dedication to sun protection, and environmental factors either speeds up or slows down the aging process. This plays a much more vital role in your skin quality and tissue makeup than the number that corresponds with your age. A patient who is 35 may have the same skin quality as a patient who is in their 50s, and vice-versa. When it comes to facelift surgery, age is a guideline, not a rule.

If you are like most people who are interested in undergoing facelift surgery, you are probably at least 40 years old and would like to correct significant signs of aging on your face. But how do you know if you are the right age for facelift surgery? How old is “too old,” or how young is “too young”?  While patients of a variety of ages may be good candidates, patients under 55 years old will experience the longest-lasting results from facelift surgery.

Before and After Facelift SurgeryWhat Can a Facelift Correct?

In order to understand why patients under age 55 see the best long-term results from facelift surgery, it is important to know what this procedure corrects. Facelift surgery improves the appearance and contour of the face by removing excess facial skin, eliminating excess fat, getting rid of saggy jowls, restoring jawline definition, and smoothing wrinkles on the lower face. In so doing, the facelift procedure recreates a more youthful appearance with tighter, smoother skin and facial tissues. For patients whose faces have these signs of aging but not yet to an extreme level, a facelift can offer a jumpstart in facial rejuvenation.

Why Do Patients Under 55 See the Best Results From Facelift Surgery?

Most patients who undergo facelift surgery are between the ages of 40 and 60, but when it comes to the results, research has shown that patients under age 55 will see the best and longest-lasting results. Patient satisfaction tends to be higher among these younger patients. These benefits are not just perceived, either – evaluations of the facial tissues and structures show that the results are indeed longer lasting. One of the reasons why is that patients younger than 55 are more likely to retain good skin quality, which helps to improve skin smoothness and enhance face shape after facelift surgery. Additionally, these patients are more likely to have only moderate signs of facial aging, which means that the correction will not need to be as extreme as for those with severe facial aging. Surgically altering the tissues of the face while they still retain some of the vitality and health of youth helps produce better results that will last longer.

Facelift in Washington DC

In March 2015, the popular plastic surgery company Lifestyle Lift closed its doors and filed for bankruptcy. This follows the 2008 lawsuit in which Lifestyle Lift was forced to pay $300,000 in a settlement for claims that the company was posting fake reviews on Lifestyle Lift became known in 2001 for advertising surgery centers that would provide a quick, one hour long, non-invasive facelift treatment.

Other than the company’s mishandling of money, the downfall of the company can most likely be attributed to its negative online image. RealSelf founder Tom Seery reported that Lifestyle Lift had only a 61 percent positive rating on the site, whereas private plastic surgeons typically yield an 89 percent positive rating for facelift procedures. So if it’s not an ineffective treatment that put people off, what was it?

Most likely it was the impersonal nature of the company itself. Patients looking for plastic surgery desire personalized attention and wish to form bonds with their doctors and their staff. The best surgery results come from highly trained doctors who fully understand the wishes of their patients.

Lifestyle Lift closing simply proves that a small price tag shouldn’t be the deciding factor when looking for a plastic surgeon. Nothing can replace the attention, communication, understanding, and support that is gained from choosing a personal plastic surgery practice – not even a few more dollar bills in your pocket.

Woman receiving a cosmetic injection into her foreheadAs many of us enter our thirties and forties, fat and collagen that is responsible for fullness in the face begins to dissipate. Over time, this loss of tissue begins the onset of fine lines, wrinkles, and folds on the skin, while volume is permanently lost in the face. In the past, surgical procedures, such as facelifts and eyelid lifts, were the only way to restore a youthful appearance to the face.

At Mesbahi Plastic Surgery, we offer the revolutionary liquid facelift treatment for women and men who desire to eliminate the signs of aging on their face without the effects that invasive surgery can leave behind.

The liquid facelift can improve many aspects of the aging face, including:

  • Hollowness under the eyes
  • Sunken cheeks
  • Creases around the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds)
  • Loss of definition in the jaw line
  • Minor scarring (acne scars)
  • “Tired” or “angry” appearance

A liquid facelift consists of a combination of neurotoxins and dermal fillers strategically injected into areas of the face that appear thin or gaunt. Every patient’s face ages at a different rate, which is why neurotoxins (BOTOX® Cosmetic) and dermal fillers that contain all-natural hyaluronic acid (JUVÉDERM®) or calcium hydroxylapatite (RADIESSE®) are used in unique combinations to diminish aging in the face.

Unlike traditional surgical procedures, the liquid facelift offers immediate results without any downtime needed for recovery. Typically, patients can expect their “new look” to last three to six months, although results can last even longer if proper skin care is followed.

Even though a liquid facelift is very effective, it is not suitable for everyone. In instances where deep facial lines sagging skin have developed, an invasive surgical procedure will be more beneficial.
