Dangers of Doctors Who Are Not Board-Certified

When you make a decision to have plastic surgery, it is important that you choose a surgeon who is well qualified and experienced. However, it may be difficult to determine whether a surgeon has the skills and ability to perform your surgery and achieve the best results possible. Therefore, here is some information you should look for when choosing your plastic surgeon:

Board Certified in Plastic Surgery

You may be surprised to learn that any physician is legally able to perform a plastic surgery procedure. However, a doctor board certified in plastic surgery will have the training and experience necessary to perform the safest and most effective procedure. Just because a doctor claims to be board-certified does not mean he or she is board-certified in plastic surgery. Therefore, make sure your surgeon is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).  This is the only board certification for plastic surgery recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

ASPSMember of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS®)

It is important that your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS®). Choosing a plastic surgeon who is a member of the ASPS ensures your surgeon is highly qualified to perform your surgery. Members of the ASPS® must meet rigorous standards, including completing a minimum of six years of surgical training after medical school with at least three years of training in plastic surgery. Also, ASPS® members are also required to complete continuing medical education every year, including education on patient safety and perform all surgeries in an accredited, state-licensed, or Medicare-certified surgical facility.

Experience Performing the Specific Procedure You Want

Once you know your surgeon is board certified in plastic surgery and a member of the ASPS, it is important to make sure he or she has experience performing the specific plastic surgery procedure you want to undergo. You should also review the surgeon’s before and after photos of patients who have undergone this particular procedure so you can see the results you may be able to expect from your surgeon.

shutterstock_88974835 (1)A popular belief among many people is that larger breasts are more desirable. While this sentiment may hold true for some people, the reality is that breast size should be assessed on an individual basis. For instance, some women with smaller figures often feel like their breasts are too big for their body, while others with overly large breasts sometimes suffer from discomfort and physical limitations. When these conditions begin to negatively affect a woman’s overall well-being, surgical treatment is usually desired.

Candidates for Breast Reduction

To be a good candidate for breast reduction, patients must be healthy and have no significant medical conditions, such as diabetes or bleeding complications. Ideal patients for breast reduction are also aware that changes that their body can undergo in the future, such as pregnancy, weight gain, or weight loss, may affect the appearance of their breasts.

The following are some of the most common reasons why women decide to undergo breast reduction:

  • Reduce neck, back, and/or shoulder pain
  • Correct posture
  • Reduce sagging
  • Improve symmetry
  • Remove stretch marks
  • Eliminate sweating and/or skin rashes under the breasts
  • Increase confidence

Covered by Insurance

Since overly large breasts often cause physical problems, a breast reduction is often covered (partially or fully) by insurance providers. The amount that providers pay for depends on the following:

  • Amount of breast tissue removed
  • Extent of physical limitations
  • Steps the patient has taken to alleviate discomfort

Keep in mind that it can often take weeks, or even months, before insurance companies decide to cover these types of procedures. This is why it is important that a doctor verifies that a woman is experiencing emotional or physical discomfort well before the procedure is performed.

If the appearance of overly large breasts is bothering you, schedule a consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Alex Mesbahi. shutterstock_206631058If you’re like many people, summer is likely one of your favorite times of the year. However, as you enjoy all that the warm weather has to offer, it’s important that you protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Aside from applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen and taking cover in the shade whenever possible, here are a few other tips that can help keep your skin looking youthful.

Cleanse and Exfoliate

Prolonged exposure to the summer heat can break down skin cells, leaving you looking dry and dull in appearance. By cleansing and exfoliating, you are removing dead skin cells and promoting the healthy cells beneath to put forth your most vibrant skin possible.

Drink Water

A considerable amount of time spent in the sun will eventually dry out your skin. One of the easiest things you can do to take care of your skin is to hydrate from the inside out. Eight glasses of water per day is usually sufficient, but you may want to drink more if you’re in the sun for extended periods of time.

Antioxidants protect the body from free radicals, which attack healthy cells, can cause aging, and are precursors to cancer. By applying skincare products that contain vitamins C, E, and green tea, you can protect your skin from premature aging and even reverse the effects of sun damage.

Avoid Tanning Beds

With the popularity of tanning, it’s easy to get swept up in the craze of regularly visiting the tanning salon. What you may not know is the lights used in these tanning beds produce the same UVA and UVB rays that the sun emits and increase your risk for developing skin cancer. For a healthy tan, sunless tanning lotions can give you the sun-kissed glow you desire.

To keep your skin looking as youthful as possible, Dr. Mesbahi offers laser skin resurfacing along with other skin care treatments.

shutterstock_208466563For the last couple of decades, enhancing the breasts through breast augmentation has been the most popular form of plastic surgery. However, the desire to improve the appearance of the breasts without increasing their size has caused the number of breast lift procedures performed to increase over the last few years. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 90,000 breast lifts were performed in 2013, which is up 70 percent from 2000 and twice the rate of breast augmentation with implants.

How is a breast lift performed?

Also known as a mastopexy, this surgery is performed on an outpatient basis with the patient under general anesthesia and takes between one and a half to three hours to complete. During the procedure, one of the following incision techniques will be used:

Doughnut Incision

An incision is made around the areola.

Lollipop Incision

An incision is made around the areola that extends down toward the crease of the breast.

Anchor Incision

An incision is made around the areola that extends down toward the crease of the breast and along the breast fold.

The technique used during a breast lift depends on the:

  • Size and shape of the breasts

  • Location of the areolas

  • Extent of sagging in the breasts

  • Amount of excess skin to be removed

  • Quality of the skin’s elasticity

During your initial consultation, Dr. Alex Mesbahi will discuss your desires and examine your breasts to determine which incision technique will best meet your needs.

What are the results like?

The final outcome of a breast lift procedure will become apparent over the next couple of months as the shape and position of the breasts begin to settle. In most instances, patients can expect their results to last many years as long they maintain their weight and refrain from becoming pregnant in the future.
