Rhinoplasty Recovery Tips

3 Minute Read

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job or nose surgery, can correct a bulbous nose and any crooks, bumps, or other bothersome attributes.

With many different nose types, shapes, sizes, ethnicities, and other contributing factors to your nose, every procedure varies from the next depending on the desired outcome and amount of correction.

So, how long is the recovery? This comprehensive blog will list the typical recovery timeline and provide tips on how to recuperate more comfortably and quicker after your nose surgery.

What to Expect After Nose Surgery

After rhinoplasty, your nose is gently covered in bandages and a splint. These are designed to support the nose as it begins to heal.

You may experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness, which should dissipate within three weeks. Prescription medication can help reduce these symptoms while you recover.

How Long Does the Recovery Take?

Many patients can resume working after one or two weeks. Over time, the nasal structure may change as it adjusts and fully heals.

Everyone heals at a different rate, so there is no exact timeframe for your recovery, but typically one or two weeks is a safe estimate.

How Painful is the Procedure?

During your procedure, you are sedated with anesthetics and unable to feel anything. Patients are comfortable and prescribed medication to reduce pain while they recuperate at home.

Will There be Scars?

Incision techniques determine how the surgeon approaches the nasal structure, which can be open or closed.

The closed technique makes incisions within the nostrils, and the open method makes an incision on the tissue between the nostrils.

Both techniques leave a nearly invisible scar; the open method scar is usually concealed by the natural nasal contours.

Does Insurance Cover the Surgery?

Insurance policies do not cover most cosmetic surgeries, but some plans do include functional rhinoplasty if the surgery is to correct a deviated septum (septoplasty) or other correctional procedures.

Please contact your insurance provider to learn more about your coverage details.

Tips for Your Recovery

While you heal from your surgery, some tips to keep in mind include:

  • Avoiding direct sunlight and using protection such as dark sunglasses, a large-brimmed hat, and sunscreen
  • Being patient with your body and contacting your surgeon if any complications arise
  • Using cold compresses to alleviate swelling
  • Not blowing your nose for at least one or two weeks
  • Following all post-operative care instructions carefully
  • Having medications and accommodations prepared prior to your surgery
  • Keeping your head elevated and upright
  • Preventing any pressure on the nose
  • Resting and getting plenty of sleep, especially during the first week
  • Scheduling a friend or loved one to care for you the first few days

Harmony and symmetry exist all over nature. In some ways, it’s simply a part of life. Humans have always been attracted to the idea of balance, both spiritually and aesthetically.

So it’s no surprise we also seek symmetry when it comes to our facial features. The nose, in particular, has a certain power in changing the entire face. Having a nose that seems out of balance can make people look and feel less attractive.

Rhinoplasty can be useful in getting the nose back in harmony with the rest of the face. As one of Washington’s top rhinoplasty surgeons, Dr. Mesbahi is skilled at helping people craft a nose that fits beautifully with their features and makes them feel more attractive than ever.

A Natural Fit: How Rhinoplasty Rejuvenates Appearances

It’s funny how much the little things can matter. When it comes to the face, even a small shift is enough to produce a radical change. The nose, in some ways, exemplifies this the most—and rhinoplasty results often show how much a change can affect everything else.

How the Nose Affects the Appearance

Barbra Streisand is a multi-talented performer and artist. She’s also a woman who’s made headlines for her refusal to change the shape of her nose—which goes to show just how distinctive one simple feature can be.

The shape of the nose affects how your facial profile looks. Having a nose that is too long may make your profile asymmetrical, even if other features are otherwise in balance. It can create a “beaky” or protruding effect that often looks unattractive.

The tip of the nose is also instrumental in how it fits in with the face. Sometimes, the tip can grow crooked or bulbous, throwing it off balance with the rest of your facial features.

Nose Job 101: How Rhinoplasty Works

This surgery is designed to change the shape or size of the nose. Rhinoplasty can also be used to treat defects in the nasal structures that affect breathing, like a deviated septum.

Dr. Mesbahi uses the Vectra 3D imaging system to get the best look at the patient’s nasal features. The system creates 3D renderings of the nose, allowing Dr. Mesbahi to better pinpoint problem areas and visually show what rhinoplasty can do to help.

Procedure Details

Dr. Mesbahi offers both open and closed rhinoplasty:

Open rhinoplasty refers to the use of incisions across the columella, or the thin strip of tissue right between the nostrils. This method allows for better visualization of the nasal structures but may lead to a longer surgical time and healing.

Closed rhinoplasty uses incisions made along the inside of the nostrils instead. This method usually results in no visible scarring.

Recovery

Dr. Mesbahi will cover the surgical sites with bandages and place a splint over the nose to support its new shape. There will be swelling and some pain, especially right after surgery, but most discomfort should resolve within one week.

Most patients may go back to work at this point, but the nose will continue to heal and change for about a year after surgery. Results are meant to be long lasting.

Rhinoplasty and Facial Contours

By using rhinoplasty to correct defects, patients are left with a nose that fits in better with the rest of their features.

Rhinoplasty can:

  • Reduce large nostrils
  • Correct an upturned nose (“pig nose”)
  • Remove bumps or humps
  • Correct a nose tip that is bulbous, crooked, or hooked
  • Smooth over depressions on the bridge of the nose
  • Correct asymmetry along the nose

Dr. Mesbahi is known for his expertise in using rhinoplasty to improve harmony and get the most natural results possible. That talent has given him membership into the exclusive Rhinoplasty Society in the DC area.

Because it is centrally located on the face, the nose is one of the most noticeable features of a person’s appearance. When people are unhappy with the size or shape of their nose, they typically desire nose surgery, often referred to as rhinoplasty, to improve their overall facial balance. Many people considering rhinoplasty wonder what their nose would look like if they had nasal surgery. While looking at before-and-after photos can give you a general idea of what results you can expect, advancements in technology have allowed for better ways to view the outcome of your procedure before you undergo surgery. At Mesbahi Plastic Surgery, we offer our patients innovative Vectra® 3D Imaging to accurately simulate what their results will look like prior to their procedure.

How Does VECTRA® 3D Imaging Work?

The Vectra® 3D Imaging process is quick and efficient:

  • Patients stand in front of the simulator while the system takes pictures of their nose. Several images are taken from a variety of angles to construct a three-dimensional picture of your face.
  • Any concerns with your nose are identified, and Dr. Mesbahi recommends a treatment plan. The techniques intended to correct the issues are communicated and entered into the system.
  • Specialized software is applied to create a postoperative visual simulation by altering the images to reveal your rhinoplasty results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there any pain associated with VECTRA® 3D Imaging?

No pain is involved with the imaging system. VECTRA® 3D Imaging takes digital photos of your nose for an accurate representation of your expected results.

How closely do the simulated results match the actual outcome?

Although the physical results of your rhinoplasty may vary slightly, the images from the Vectra® 3D Imaging system are typically very similar to what you can expect after your surgery.

Selecting Your Surgeon

Due to the complexity of rhinoplasty, it is imperative that patients choose the right surgeon to perform their procedure and ensure that the desired results are achieved.

Board Certification

Before deciding to undergo any plastic surgery procedure, you should check to see if the surgeon is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery. Being board certified means that the surgeon has gone through extensive training and testing, and has been evaluated by a panel of doctors who are already certified. The American Board of Medical Specialties does not recognize some boards, so doing some research can help you avoid potential risks.

Pricing

Many patients decide to proceed with the least expensive surgeon possible, and some are willing to travel long distances to save money on their surgery. These decisions often lead to dissatisfaction and revision surgery later, which ends up costing more in the long run. An experienced, well-credentialed surgeon is not likely to be the least expensive option. Your nose is an important part of your appearance and should be cared for by an expert with proven results and experience, who uses advanced technology in a safe, clean environment. You should consider investing in the right surgeon to significantly reduce the risk of complications and undesirable results.

Rhinoplasty, one of the most popular procedures performed, can drastically improve the appearance and function of your nose while improving your quality of life in the process. Even with all of the benefits this surgery offers, some individuals still have questions regarding the procedure. For instance, many people wonder if rhinoplasty will affect the sound of their voice. While many surgeons agree that most rhinoplasty procedures result in minimal to no changes in the voice, every situation is different, and concerns regarding your voice should be discussed during your consultation.

Research Results

An article published in the February 2014 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) addressed this very issue. Dr. Kamran Khazaeni, along with colleagues of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, conducted a study to determine if changes occur in a person’s voice after undergoing rhinoplasty. The conclusion of the article stated that “changes in voice after rhinoplasty are perceptible to patients as well as to experts, but generally don’t cause problems with speech function.”

The study was performed on 27 people (22 women and five men) in Iran, where rhinoplasty is one of the most frequently performed procedures. After patients underwent rhinoplasty surgery, researchers had each person answer a questionnaire about how they thought their voice sounded. Trained listeners were asked to monitor random before-and-after audios of each patient to determine if there was a significant change in the patients’ voices.

The listeners determined that any change in a patient’s voice after surgery was likely due to an increase in hyponasality. Hyponasal speech is a term used to describe the voice when there is an inadequate amount of air moving through the nasal cavity. This condition commonly occurs when a person has a stuffy nose. However, they noted that although the rhinoplasty may have slightly changed a patient’s voice, the change in sound would barely be noticed by the untrained ear, if at all. More importantly, the researchers concluded that any alteration in the voice did not negatively affect patients’ lives in any way.

Rhinoplasty Pros and Cons

After researching the positive and negative effects of rhinoplasty, evidence leans heavily in favor of the procedure. Corrected shape and profile of the nose, improved breathing, increased confidence, and enhanced facial balance are very common outcomes from this surgery, as opposed to rare cases where patients’ voices are negatively affected. Many famous singers have undergone rhinoplasty and continue to sing beautifully, and are completely satisfied with their rejuvenated nasal structure.

When it comes to beauty, only a combination of art and science can achieve the maximum potential for facial symmetry. The necessity for keen artistic awareness and medical experience is readily apparent with rhinoplasty. More commonly referred to as “nose surgery,” rhinoplasty has some surprising functional benefits along with the ability to perfect one’s facial aesthetic.

Benefits

Enhanced Breathing

Many people are surprised to find that nose surgery can improve their breathing. A septoplasty can correct a deviated septum, which allows the nasal passages to function correctly. Being able to breathe with greater ease can help in many endeavors, including athletic potential and the performing arts.

Improved Facial Appearance

The most obvious benefit of rhinoplasty is an improved facial appearance. Still, few realize just how impactful an improved nose is to the total look of one’s face. The nose is a centerline for the face, and it can balance or unbalance the rest of a person’s features. A proportionate, well-shaped nose gives the facial structure an attractive focal point.

Psychological Competitive Edge

When people feel good about the way they look, they naturally have more self-confidence. What many of us don’t consider, though, is how that increase in confidence can provide a competitive edge. It is quite common for patients to have nose surgery so that they can attack problems more assertively and move forward in their careers. Furthermore, it is not just celebrities who see a career boost from rhinoplasty. Plenty of career-focused individuals understand the necessity of looking their best in competitive fields like law, marketing, and corporate office jobs.

Techniques

Dr. Mesbahi offers two approaches to nose surgery, the open and closed methods.

Ready for rhinoplasty-img-blog

Open Rhinoplasty

During open rhinoplasty, an incision is made on the columella, or the thin strip of tissue between the nostrils. The skin is pulled back, allowing for full visualization of the nasal structures. However, this approach does make for longer surgery and recovery times than a closed rhinoplasty would.

Closed Rhinoplasty

For closed rhinoplasty, a small incision is made inside the nose. The structures of the nose are then reshaped from within the nasal cavity. Closed rhinoplasties are often preferred by patients, as they leave no visible scarring. Closed rhinoplasty also offers shorter surgical time and a reduced recovery period.

When Should You Consider Getting a Rhinoplasty?

Choosing any surgical procedure is a huge decision to make. You should never rush into any cosmetic procedure. Rhinoplasty might be the right procedure for you if:

  • You feel self-conscious about the way your nose looks
  • You have had a broken nose or facial disfigurement
  • You have a hard time breathing through your nose
  • You think that rhinoplasty could improve your life and self-image

If you are thinking about getting nose surgery, then it is probably a good time to schedule a consultation at Dr. Mesbahi’s office. Dr. Mesbahi is a board-certified plastic surgeon and a graduate of the George Washington University School of Medicine. Remember to ask about potential recovery time and post-surgical care so that you can plan for your rhinoplasty accordingly.

Rhinoplasty Revision

In some instances, patients come to Dr. Mesbahi’s office for a rhinoplasty revision. There are many reasons for revision surgery that are specific to every patient. Some of the most common motivations for a rhinoplasty revision include:

  • The first rhinoplasty was performed poorly.
  • The client is unsatisfied with the results of their nose surgery.
  • A new injury has resulted in the need for corrective surgery.
  • The patient’s aesthetic tastes changed after their first rhinoplasty.

Looking for a Bargain? Think Again

Due to the high incidence of rhinoplasty revision, it is important to remember a few critical aspects involved in encouraging the highest success rate for cosmetic procedures. Several factors are resulting in a large number of people requesting revisions to their cosmetic surgery. For example, some people prioritize cost over the quality of their surgeon. In general, cutting corners for any operation is not a good idea, but it is an especially poor plan of action when surgery involves facial structures. It is critical to verify that your surgeon does not have a history of negligence or malpractice. A surgeon’s track record can be found through a little online digging. Also, you will want to make sure that your surgeon has a history of clear communication and a satisfied client list. Investigate online testimonials and reviews to see what most patients are saying about their experience.

Find a Surgeon for Your Rhinoplasty

Going even further, make sure that your surgeon is an expert in their field with accolades and peer acknowledgments. Many people come to Dr. Mesbahi for cosmetic revisions because of his history of excellence with facial surgeries. Dr. Mesbahi is also a board-certified plastic surgeon and serves as associate clinical professor at Georgetown University Hospital. Those are the type of credentials that you want to see when selecting a surgeon for your rhinoplasty.

So Your Nose Isn’t Perfect, Now What?

If you are aren’t happy with the results of previous nose surgery, then it is time to decide on a course of action. Your best choice is to find a rhinoplasty expert and get the picture-perfect results you desire. If you’re ready to undergo revision rhinoplasty, make sure that you do the following:

  • Find a reputable rhinoplasty specialist who has the appropriate credentials and a history of client success. Research several surgeons to make sure that you’ve found the right doctor.
  • Define your goals and make sure they are reasonable. It might be reasonable to write down what you want to achieve with a revision. This way you can communicate your ideas clearly to your surgical team.
  • Schedule a consultation with your carefully selected plastic surgeon. Make sure you discuss your criteria for success so that it is clear what your expectations are. Your surgeon should be able to ascertain if your goals are reasonable or not.
  • Make sure that you have plenty of time available to get the proper rest and recovery. The healing process is critical to the outcome of any surgery, especially when it involves soft tissue and cartilage.

It is understandable if you feel let down by a previous poor experience with plastic surgery. However, you should feel optimistic knowing that many surgical teams have a history of changing lives with precise surgical treatments. With a little bit of research, trust, and commitment, you can be well on your way to a more beautiful nose. Even better, you can start your search with one of the best rhinoplasty teams available. Rhinoplasty ResultsIt is important to receive answers to all your questions before you elect to undergo a major surgery. Getting your questions answered will give you peace of mind and help you decide whether the procedure is right for you. Here are some of the answers to frequently asked questions about rhinoplasty, a popular procedure that can enhance the appearance and function of the nose.

Can rhinoplasty fix breathing problems?

Rhinoplasty can be combined with septoplasty to correct a deviated septum and straighten the nasal passages. Doing this will improve breathing problems.

How much does rhinoplasty cost?

The total cost of rhinoplasty will include the surgeon’s fee, facility fee, and anesthesia fees. These costs vary from surgeon to surgeon. The total cost of your procedure will be determined during your consultation with Dr. Mesbahi.

Can teenagers get nose surgery?

Teenagers whose noses are fully grown may safely undergo nose surgery. Most qualifying patients are at least 15 or older. Teenagers should be emotionally mature and have realistic expectations about the results.

Will I have scars after rhinoplasty?

Depending on your surgical technique, you may have a small scar after rhinoplasty. With closed rhinoplasty, there is no visible scarring because the incisions are hidden inside the nose. With open rhinoplasty, there may be slight scarring because this technique requires a small horizontal incision at the bottom of the narrow strip of tissue between the nostrils. This tiny scar is usually inconspicuous and will fade with time.

What can a surgeon change about my nose with rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can correct a wide range of cosmetic nose issues by adjusting the nostrils, tip, angle, bridge, projection, and size of the nose. A surgeon can narrow the nostrils, build up the bridge, refine the tip, make the nose less prominent, and more.

How long does swelling last after rhinoplasty?

Much of the swelling diminishes after one to two weeks, but internal swelling will not fully subside for up to a year after rhinoplasty.

Can I undergo rhinoplasty if I have a cold?

If you have a cold, it is best to postpone your procedure until you are healthy again. Undergoing surgery while you are sick, especially with an upper respiratory infection, can increase the risk of surgical complications.

When can I blow my nose after rhinoplasty?

Many surgeons agree that it is safe to gently blow your nose one week after surgery, though some recommend waiting several weeks depending on the extent of your procedure and how you are healing. It is best to discuss your case in detail with your plastic surgeon.

Will I still be able to smell after rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty may temporarily alter your sense of smell due to the swelling of the internal nasal structures. As the swelling subsides, your normal sense of smell should return. Some people who combine septoplasty with their rhinoplasty are blessed with an improved sense of smell afterward due to the opening of their nasal passages.

Are there any alternatives to rhinoplasty?

While some dermal fillers can make minor temporary adjustments to the appearance of the nose, there is no other procedure that can produce results comparable to those of rhinoplasty.

How long do I have to wear a splint after surgery?

On average, you may need to wear your splint for one week after surgery to ensure that your nose tissues heal correctly and remain unharmed during recovery.

Is nose surgery painful?

Anesthesia is administered for pain prevention during the procedure. During recovery, most patients experience only minor discomfort that can be controlled with pain medications.

Will I ever need to undergo rhinoplasty again?

If you are not happy with your results from your first rhinoplasty, you may want to undergo revision rhinoplasty. However, a second nose surgery is more complicated and requires more careful and precise technique. If you are interested in revision rhinoplasty, be sure to select an experienced revision rhinoplasty surgeon like Dr. Mesbahi.

shutterstock_82900921The nose is often one of the most noticeable features of the face and often plays a significant role in a person’s overall attractiveness. When the nose negatively affects a person’s appearance, no person is affected more than a teenager. During the last few years, the number of teenagers undergoing surgical procedures to improve the shape of their nose has skyrocketed. Known as rhinoplasty, Dr. Alex Mesbahi performs this procedure for patients of all ages at his state-of-the-art practice.

Rhinoplasty can effectively correct the following:

  • Overall nose size
  • Nose width
  • Size/position of the nostrils
  • Nose profile
  • Nasal tip (bulbous, upturned, hooked)
  • Humps and bumps on the bridge
  • Breathing problems

Good Candidates for Rhinoplasty

While a consultation will ultimately determine if someone is a good candidate for rhinoplasty, there are some guidelines that all teenage patients must meet.  Most students have their procedures performed during holiday vacations or summer breaks to allow for adequate healing time.

All teenage rhinoplasty patients must:

  • Be at least 15 years of age
  • Be in good emotional health
  • Have consent from their parent/guardian
  • Have realistic expectations about the results

Rhinoplasty Procedure

Performing a successful rhinoplasty takes the knowledge and steady hands of an experienced surgeon. A typical procedure usually lasts between two and three hours using either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Depending on whether the open or closed method is used, tiny incisions are made on the columella under the nose or inside the nose to minimize the chances of noticeable scarring after surgery. Once the nose cartilage is resculpted and the nose is shaped to a more pleasing profile, the incisions are closed.

Expected Results

In most instances, a week of downtime is needed before patients feel good enough to resume school and their daily routines. The results will become more apparent over the next few weeks as swelling subsides, but it may take up to a year to see the final results. Most teenagers find the outcome of rhinoplasty to be life changing, and they often develop a renewed sense of confidence.

Non-surgical Rhinoplasty: Use of fillers

Can a rhinoplasty be done without surgery? Well, the simple answer is no. Non- surgical rhinoplasty, or liquid rhinoplasty, has become somewhat of a marketing catch phrase used mainly by those who may not perform actual rhinoplasty surgeries. The fillers used are most commonly hyaluronic acid (HA) injectables such as Restylane or Juvederm, or longer lasting fillers such as Radiesse. While there are reversing agents for the HA fillers, there is no reversal agent for Radiesse and it should therefore be used with extreme caution.

The non-surgical rhinoplasty can be used to make changes in the profile of the nose by placing filler around an existing hump to create a straighter nose profile. However, in my practice, fillers are used in the nose mostly to address subtle contour abnormalities following primary or revision rhinoplasty.

These tend to be scenarios in which the soft tissue or skin of the nose does not adapt adequately to the underlying structural framework (bone and cartilage) the way it should have. This can be due to thick skin, scar tissue, or in rare cases skin laxity.  Some of the risks associated with filler placement into the nose include poor result, contour abnormalities, and skin necrosis. They should therefore be done by an experienced provider capable of addressing such complications should they occur.

Rhinoplasty involves meticulous surgical planning and technique to address issues associated with the bridge of the nose, nasal tip, nostrils and potentially any deviation associated with the septum cartilage  or nasal bones. These cannot be addresses with fillers which is why the term non-surgical rhinoplasty can be misleading.
