Frequently Asked Questions About Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty ResultsIt is important to receive answers to all your questions before you elect to undergo a major surgery. Getting your questions answered will give you peace of mind and help you decide whether the procedure is right for you. Here are some of the answers to frequently asked questions about rhinoplasty, a popular procedure that can enhance the appearance and function of the nose.

Can rhinoplasty fix breathing problems?

Rhinoplasty can be combined with septoplasty to correct a deviated septum and straighten the nasal passages. Doing this will improve breathing problems.

How much does rhinoplasty cost?

The total cost of rhinoplasty will include the surgeon’s fee, facility fee, and anesthesia fees. These costs vary from surgeon to surgeon. The total cost of your procedure will be determined during your consultation with Dr. Mesbahi.

Can teenagers get nose surgery?

Teenagers whose noses are fully grown may safely undergo nose surgery. Most qualifying patients are at least 15 or older. Teenagers should be emotionally mature and have realistic expectations about the results.

Will I have scars after rhinoplasty?

Depending on your surgical technique, you may have a small scar after rhinoplasty. With closed rhinoplasty, there is no visible scarring because the incisions are hidden inside the nose. With open rhinoplasty, there may be slight scarring because this technique requires a small horizontal incision at the bottom of the narrow strip of tissue between the nostrils. This tiny scar is usually inconspicuous and will fade with time.

What can a surgeon change about my nose with rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can correct a wide range of cosmetic nose issues by adjusting the nostrils, tip, angle, bridge, projection, and size of the nose. A surgeon can narrow the nostrils, build up the bridge, refine the tip, make the nose less prominent, and more.

How long does swelling last after rhinoplasty?

Much of the swelling diminishes after one to two weeks, but internal swelling will not fully subside for up to a year after rhinoplasty.

Can I undergo rhinoplasty if I have a cold?

If you have a cold, it is best to postpone your procedure until you are healthy again. Undergoing surgery while you are sick, especially with an upper respiratory infection, can increase the risk of surgical complications.

When can I blow my nose after rhinoplasty?

Many surgeons agree that it is safe to gently blow your nose one week after surgery, though some recommend waiting several weeks depending on the extent of your procedure and how you are healing. It is best to discuss your case in detail with your plastic surgeon.

Will I still be able to smell after rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty may temporarily alter your sense of smell due to the swelling of the internal nasal structures. As the swelling subsides, your normal sense of smell should return. Some people who combine septoplasty with their rhinoplasty are blessed with an improved sense of smell afterward due to the opening of their nasal passages.

Are there any alternatives to rhinoplasty?

While some dermal fillers can make minor temporary adjustments to the appearance of the nose, there is no other procedure that can produce results comparable to those of rhinoplasty.

How long do I have to wear a splint after surgery?

On average, you may need to wear your splint for one week after surgery to ensure that your nose tissues heal correctly and remain unharmed during recovery.

Is nose surgery painful?

Anesthesia is administered for pain prevention during the procedure. During recovery, most patients experience only minor discomfort that can be controlled with pain medications.

Will I ever need to undergo rhinoplasty again?

If you are not happy with your results from your first rhinoplasty, you may want to undergo revision rhinoplasty. However, a second nose surgery is more complicated and requires more careful and precise technique. If you are interested in revision rhinoplasty, be sure to select an experienced revision rhinoplasty surgeon like Dr. Mesbahi.

shutterstock_82900921The nose is often one of the most noticeable features of the face and often plays a significant role in a person’s overall attractiveness. When the nose negatively affects a person’s appearance, no person is affected more than a teenager. During the last few years, the number of teenagers undergoing surgical procedures to improve the shape of their nose has skyrocketed. Known as rhinoplasty, Dr. Alex Mesbahi performs this procedure for patients of all ages at his state-of-the-art practice.

Rhinoplasty can effectively correct the following:

  • Overall nose size
  • Nose width
  • Size/position of the nostrils
  • Nose profile
  • Nasal tip (bulbous, upturned, hooked)
  • Humps and bumps on the bridge
  • Breathing problems

Good Candidates for Rhinoplasty

While a consultation will ultimately determine if someone is a good candidate for rhinoplasty, there are some guidelines that all teenage patients must meet.  Most students have their procedures performed during holiday vacations or summer breaks to allow for adequate healing time.

All teenage rhinoplasty patients must:

  • Be at least 15 years of age
  • Be in good emotional health
  • Have consent from their parent/guardian
  • Have realistic expectations about the results

Rhinoplasty Procedure

Performing a successful rhinoplasty takes the knowledge and steady hands of an experienced surgeon. A typical procedure usually lasts between two and three hours using either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Depending on whether the open or closed method is used, tiny incisions are made on the columella under the nose or inside the nose to minimize the chances of noticeable scarring after surgery. Once the nose cartilage is resculpted and the nose is shaped to a more pleasing profile, the incisions are closed.

Expected Results

In most instances, a week of downtime is needed before patients feel good enough to resume school and their daily routines. The results will become more apparent over the next few weeks as swelling subsides, but it may take up to a year to see the final results. Most teenagers find the outcome of rhinoplasty to be life changing, and they often develop a renewed sense of confidence.

If you’re like many people considering rhinoplasty, you’ve likely wondered what your nose would look like after surgery. While the before-and-after photos that many plastic surgeons offer can give you somewhat of an idea on what to expect, advancements in technology have enabled better ways to see the outcome of your procedure. At Mesbahi Plastic Surgery, we offer patients innovative Vectra® 3D Imaging technology to accurately simulate what their results will look like after rhinoplasty.

How does Vectra® 3D Imaging work?

The Vectra® 3D Imaging process can be explained in three easy steps:

Step One

Several images of your nose are taken from a variety angles to construct a three-dimensional picture of your face.

Step Two

Any problems with your nose are identified, and Dr. Mesbahi will recommend how he intends to correct these issues.

Step Three

Specialized software is applied to create a postoperative visual of your rhinoplasty procedure.

Is there any pain involved with Vectra 3D-Imaging?

No, there is absolutely zero pain associated with the Vectra® 3D Imaging system. Patient’s simply stand in front of the simulator while the Vectra® 3D Imaging system takes pictures and then alters the photos.

Will the Vectra® 3D Imaging system determine if I am a candidate for rhinoplasty?

Although the Vectra® 3D Imaging system will definitely help you see the results you can obtain from a rhinoplasty, a personalized consultation with Dr. Mesbahi will ultimately determine if you are a good candidate.

How close will the simulated results be to the actual outcome?

Although the actual results of your rhinoplasty may vary slightly, the images from the Vectra® 3D Imaging system are typically similar in appearance.

How can I find out more about Vectra® 3D Imaging?

Profile of a female model with hair in a blonde bunAs one of the most popular procedures performed in 2013, rhinoplasty can drastically improve the appearance and function of the nose while typically improving a patient’s quality of life in the process. But even with all of the benefits that this surgery offers, some individuals still have questions about the procedure. For instance, a number of people wonder if rhinoplasty will affect the sound of their voice.

An article published in the February 2014 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) addressed this very issue. Along with colleagues of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Kamran Khazaeni conducted a study to determine if changes occur in a person’s voice after undergoing rhinoplasty.

“Changes in voice after rhinoplasty are perceptible to patients as well as to experts, but generally don’t cause problems with speech function.”

The study was performed on 27 people (22 women and 5 men) in Iran, where rhinoplasty is one of the most frequently performed procedures. After patients underwent rhinoplasty surgery, researchers made each person answer a questionnaire about how they thought their voice sounded. Trained listeners were asked to listen to random before-and-after audios of each patient to determine if there was a significant change in the patients’ voices. According to the article, “changes in voice after rhinoplasty are perceptible to patients as well as to experts, but generally don’t cause problems with speech function.”

These listeners determined that any change in a patient’s voice after surgery was likely due to an increase in hyponasality. Hyponasal speech is a term used to describe the voice when there is an inadequate amount of air moving through the nasal cavity. This condition commonly occurs when a person has a stuffy nose. However, they noted that although the rhinoplasty may have slightly changed a patient’s voice, the change in sound would barely be noticed by the untrained ear, if at all. More importantly, the researchers concluded that any alteration in the voice did not negatively affect the patient’s lives in any way.

Female with short blonde hair thinking with question marks above her headAs the central part of the face, the nose is one of the most noticeable features of a person’s appearance. However, when individuals are unhappy with the size and/or shape of their nose, they typically desire a rhinoplasty (nose surgery) to improve their overall facial appearance. Due to the complexity of this procedure, it is imperative that patients choose the right surgeon to perform their rhinoplasty.

To ensure that you choose a surgeon that will perform your rhinoplasty safely and effectively, we’ve provided some valuable information below.

Board Certification

Before you decide to undergo any plastic surgery procedure, you should always check to see if the surgeon is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery. Being board certified means that the surgeon has gone through extensive testing and has been evaluated by a panel of doctors who are already certified. Some boards are not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Many patients make the unfortunate decision to proceed with the least expensive surgeon, and some will even travel great distances to save money on the surgery. It is not uncommon for these decisions to lead to revision surgery that ends up costing more in the long run. The simple fact is that an experienced, well-credentialed surgeon will likely not be “cheaper.”  Being a central part of your appearance, the nose should be cared for by an expert with proven results you can see. You should consider investing in not only anticipated great results, but also getting through the surgery safely and with no complications.

Before & After Photos

During your consultation with a potential surgeon, always ask to see before and after photos of previous patients who have undergone rhinoplasty. This will not only give you an idea about how often they perform nose surgery, but it can also hint at what your final results will look like. Dr. Mesbahi also performs Vectra 3D imaging and morphing to provide his patients with a detailed analysis of their face and to show them what the results could look like.

The Facility

When searching for the right surgeon, make sure that he or she performs rhinoplasty at an accredited facility or hospital. This not only puts you at ease throughout the procedure, but also greatly decreases the likelihood that complications will occur during surgery.

Dr. Alex Mesbahi is a board-certified plastic surgeon who is extensively experienced in performing rhinoplasty surgery. He performs all of his procedures at his private, state-of-the-art surgery center and is dedicated to providing each and every one of his patients with results that they can feel great about.

Non-surgical Rhinoplasty: Use of fillers

Can a rhinoplasty be done without surgery? Well, the simple answer is no. Non- surgical rhinoplasty, or liquid rhinoplasty, has become somewhat of a marketing catch phrase used mainly by those who may not perform actual rhinoplasty surgeries. The fillers used are most commonly hyaluronic acid (HA) injectables such as Restylane or Juvederm, or longer lasting fillers such as Radiesse. While there are reversing agents for the HA fillers, there is no reversal agent for Radiesse and it should therefore be used with extreme caution.

The non-surgical rhinoplasty can be used to make changes in the profile of the nose by placing filler around an existing hump to create a straighter nose profile. However, in my practice, fillers are used in the nose mostly to address subtle contour abnormalities following primary or revision rhinoplasty.

These tend to be scenarios in which the soft tissue or skin of the nose does not adapt adequately to the underlying structural framework (bone and cartilage) the way it should have. This can be due to thick skin, scar tissue, or in rare cases skin laxity.  Some of the risks associated with filler placement into the nose include poor result, contour abnormalities, and skin necrosis. They should therefore be done by an experienced provider capable of addressing such complications should they occur.

Rhinoplasty involves meticulous surgical planning and technique to address issues associated with the bridge of the nose, nasal tip, nostrils and potentially any deviation associated with the septum cartilage  or nasal bones. These cannot be addresses with fillers which is why the term non-surgical rhinoplasty can be misleading.
